It’s been five days since Hurricane Sandy swept through the Eastern Seaboard, uprooting life for thousands, and now claiming  close to 100 lives. And while we still have heavy hearts, there is much to be proud of as we witness a community—really, a nation respond.

Visiting the Red Cross headquarters on Tuesday, the president summed it up: “During the darkness of the storm, I think we also see what’s brightest in America.”

It was a theme of  individualism and community working together, a theme that Martin Bashir expressed in his msnbc promo shot earlier this summer on a pier overlooking Coney Island, a coastal area now ravaged by Sandy.

Photographer John Huntington captured the destruction at Coney Island in the photo below. (See more of his work at http://controlgeek.net/)
