Republican strategist John Brabender slammed President Obama over gun control Thursday on Jansing & Co.

During his State of the Union address Tuesday, Obama pushed for tighter gun legislation by referencing the families of victims of the shooting tragedies that have rocked the nation in the past year, saying "they deserve a vote" on proposals to reduce gun violence.

Brabender responded to the president's remarks, saying Obama "is leveraging terrible tragedies that have happened in this country, playing on emotions that makes good TV and standing ovations. But he offered no leadership, no ideas. And I think that's what a coward does."

msnbc Political Analyst Karen Finney rebuffed those remarks by saying Obama has never talked about taking guns away from responsible gun owners. Finney also highlighted the president calling on Congress to vote on new gun control measures.

"The president's point was 'don't be such a coward that you won't take a vote, stand up and vote,'" said Finney.

NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre wrote a new opinion piece on Wednesday titled "Stand and Fight," outlining a new plan of action against gun control proposals.

"LaPierre is crazy like a fox," said Finney. "This is all about driving sales and driving up membership. The whole last third of the op-ed reads more like a fundraising letter."

Brabender added, "I do think it is his responsibility as running this large organization for pro-gun ownership that they do get people excited and want to be part of the democratic process and fight for their rights."
