Vice President Joe Biden attended the inauguration mass for the new head of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis, in St Peter’s Square March 19, 2013, in Vatican City, Vatican.

The mass was held in front of an expected crowd of about 1 million who flocked to the square to see the former Argentinian Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio. He was selected as the church’s first Latin American pope last week.

Biden, who is a Catholic, also met with Italian Premier Mario Monti while visited the country on Monday.
