Coming up on Hardball...

07/20/11 03:12PM

Gang Warfare! The clock’s ticking, and the debt ceiling debate is still going strong, just two weeks shy of the Aug. 2 deadline. The Gang of Six has a plan on the table—it’s crafted by members of both parties and President Obama stands behind its main tenets—but Tea Party Republicans are still saying “no deal!” How much longer can this go on?  Gang of Six member Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) joins us tonight, as does Rep. Mick Mulvaney (R-SC), co-author of the “Cut, Cap and Balance” bill that passed in the House yesterday evening.   Then—What would Reagan do? read more

Here's what we're watching today: The Gang of Six proposal: Will momentum continue to build towards a deal based on the framework set forth by the bipartisan Gang of Six? President Obama gave it his blessing, Senators of both parties are lining up behind it, but what about House Republicans? They passed their "Cut, Cap and Balance" plan last night, but it has zero chance of going anywhere. read more

Congress continues to 'fiddle around'

Let me finish tonight with a bright picture we all know so well. You know, when you're in the city on a weekend - down near the art museum or the big downtown park and there's this guy in a Marcel Marceau costume who's doing mime. You know, pretending that he's pushing up against a wall. Miming out there on the sidewalk - pretending - like Marcel Marceau - to be pushing up against a wall. read more

Cut, cap and balance…or duck, dodge, and dismantle? We’re covering tonight’s House vote on the Republican’s answer to the debate over the economy.  And Tea Party Republican Joe Walsh is circulating a letter among House Republicans saying don’t raise the debt ceiling, even if it means letting the country default! He plays Hardball tonight. Next up: The Strategists, Todd Harris and Steve McMahon, tackle strategy in the political fight over the debt ceiling. read more

Two stories this morning -- the debt fight here at home and the Rupert Murdoch scandal in Britain. Let's start in Washington, where House Speaker John Boehner will hold a vote on the Cut, Cap and Balance plan, which has absolutely zero chance of becoming law. At the White House, President Obama has no public events on his schedule and he'll probably spend his day on the phone with members of Congress in search of a resolution in the debt fight. read more

Matthews on equality and the US

Let me finish tonight with a grand American sight. It's what I saw yesterday at a San Francisco airport, what everyone saw who went past a restaurant, bar or any other place where there were people and a television. It's the huge bunch of men cheering the American women's soccer team in the World Cup. The whoops went up every time they scored, the howls everytime Japan scored a goal.  As I said, the groups I saw were overwhelmingly men, and not all young men by any means. This is the great American development. read more
