New Hampshire Senator Kelly Ayotte was the only ‘no’ vote in the Northeast on expanding background checks for gun purchases. Now she’s facing the heat at home. In an emotional confrontation, the daughter of the principal at Sandy Hook Elementary School asked Ayotte why she thought background checks were so burdensome for gun owners.

President Obama says he will try again to close the prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where 100 out of 166 inmates are on a hunger strike. It’s a promise he first made as a candidate and has thus far failed to keep.

It’s been a banner year for gay rights advocates, but the new immigration reform bill doesn’t include provisions for same-sex couples. And Republicans are threatening to sink the entire bill if any provision is added to allow green card rights for same-sex partners.

In Massachusetts, it’s U.S. Congressman Ed Markey against political newcomer Gabriel Gomez for John Kerry’s old Senate seat.
