Good morning! Here’s what we’re working on today:
Republicans really don’t care about a deal on the debt, do they? Once upon a time, House Speaker John Boehner promised adult action on the debt ceiling. But since then, the Tea Party wing of his party took him to task, and now it looks like Republicans are doing whatever they can to extort deep spending cuts from President Obama without raising a penny more of revenue. And they’re threatening to take the American economy off a cliff in a high-stakes game of chicken. They surely know that a crippled U.S. economy hurts everyone – but mainly President Obama. We’ll be talking to Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown tonight.
Senator Kirsten Gillibrand also joins us tonight about her campaign to get more women involved in politics. It’s called “Off the Sidelines” and it comes at a crucial time – the 2010 election was the first in 30 years that actually shrunk the number of women in Congress. Gillibrand joins us along with one member of Congress she helped get elected – Rep. Kathy Hochul (D-NY). http://nyti.ms/jVec73
Also in New York, lawyers for former IMF head Dominique Strauss Kahn are meeting with prosecutors. The case against DSK has fallen apart, due to serious credibility questions about his accuser. http://nyti.ms/p2DNR9
In 2012 news, Mitt Romney pulled in less money than expected – just over $18 million for the 2nd quarter – but he still leads the Republican pack It’s worth noting that Mitt’s haul was less than he took in for the first quarter after announcing his candidacy in 2007.
Newt Gingrich reported his campaign is in debt.
And President Obama hosts a Twitter town hall today.
Finally, Happy Birthday to former First Lady Nancy Reagan! She’s 90 today.
