At 7pm ET today, the state of Georgia will execute Troy Davis. Davis was convicted of killing an off-duty police officer in 1989, but since then, seven of nine witnesses have recanted their stories. Former President Jimmy Carter, former FBI Director William Sessions and msnbc's Al Sharpton have led the charge to spare Davis' life, but the Georgia Pardons Board decided yesterday not to give him clemency. In its lead editorial today, the New York Times calls this case a "grievous wrong."
President Obama will publicly push for the Palestinians to drop their bid for statehood today when he addresses the U.N. General Assembly. He'll follow up his speech with separate meetings with Israeli and Palestinian leaders as he seeks to bring both sides back to the negotiating table for direct peace talks.
