Today's big picture takes us to New Zealand -- where 38 pilot whales were stranded on a remote beach. Rescuers tried everything they could to save the whales, but rough seas made rescue near impossible. The big question is, what happened to this whale pod? There's speculation in local reports that one may have been sick, leading the rest of the family to follow. Or, perhaps they were being chased by predators. As a local photographer on that beach said, "...this is devastating", and we couldn't agree more.
