The Trail: Election night ‘wild cards’ critical in Senate fate

It’s crunch time for Senate candidates across the country with Election Day just one day away. Both parties see a map to a Senate majority, but our new NBC News/Marist polls show Republicans with an edge:

  • In Kentucky, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell might be more confident in his chances of becoming Majority Leader, opening up a big lead over Alison Lundergan Grimes.
  • In Georgia, Democrats’ hopes for Michelle Nunn are hitting some tough realities in the red state: Republican businessman David Perdue has pulled ahead in the poll. If neither candidate hits 50% on Tuesday, it means a January run-off.
  • In Louisiana, Democrats are running into a similar problem: incumbent Sen. Mary Landrieu actually leads her Republican challengers, but if Sen. Landrieu doesn’t hit that 50% threshold Tuesday night, she becomes the underdog in a head-to-head match-up with Republican Bill Cassidy.
