Bronx, New York, native Kalief Browder was detained at Rikers Island prison for three years awaiting trial for allegedly stealing a backpack when he was 16. While maintaining his innocence, he was beaten by prison guards and kept in solitary confinement. Not long after being released, Browder committed suicide.
