Bronx, New York, native Kalief Browder was detained at Rikers Island prison for three years awaiting trial for allegedly stealing a backpack when he was 16. While maintaining his innocence, he was beaten by prison guards and kept in solitary confinement. Not long after being released, Browder committed suicide. As New York takes its first steps to shut down the prison, Kalief’s brother, Deion Browder, is speaking out about how the U.S. prison system can be fixed.
