Rebuilding after Sandy: Morning Joe on location in the Rockaways

Morning Joe's Louis Burgdorf and Clayton Collins spent days in the Rockaways surveying the havoc super-storm Sandy wrought.

Morning Joe's Louis Burgdorf and Clayton Collins spent days in the Rockaways surveying the havoc super-storm Sandy wrought. While there,  they met Linda Peavey. Peavey's son is serving in Afghanistan. He called his mother the night of the storm and instructed her to use wet blankets to reduce the smoke entering her apartment from the fire that erupted next door and told her to get out of the building right before the fire overtook the residence. The family credits the son with saving Peavey's life.

Peavey's home was burned to the ground and still stands as a pile of ruins. She's worried she'll be forgotton, but charities like the Graybeards are working to help her rebuild. Joe and Mika are hosting a fundraising event tonight at 6:30 p.m. at Espace in New York City. For more information head to ReliefForRockaway.com and check out our segment.
