Eleanor Roosevelt

Eleanor Roosevelt: No woman in American history has been more admired, more powerful and more controversial. Throughout the Great Depression and World War II, she served as Franklin D. Roosevelt’s eyes, ears and legs, traveling extensively in the United States and abroad. She transformed the role of first lady and became a powerful political figure in her own right, voicing her opinion on a wide range of social causes, including youth employment, civil liberties as well as civil rights for blacks and women. After FDR’s death in 1945, she channeled her passion for world issues as a delegate to the United Nations General Assembly. She conquered many worlds with her shy dignity and fierce determination and in doing so became a role model for generations of women.
